Bliss!Ohariu Lodge is set on a property of 1.3 acres comprising flat lawns, shrubs, mature trees, a meandering stream and a hillside of pine trees.

The stream is home to a number of eels, including "Jaws" who we occasionally hand feed.

Birdlife in the garden includes both native and introduced species. Native species include the charming little fantail, the white-bibbed tui with its enchanting songs and warbles, the ungainly but colourful Pukeko or "swamp hen", and at night the occasional Ruru or Morepork, a native owl. Ducks, ring-tailed pheasants, Canada geese, kingfishers, doves and the usual collection of sparrows, magpies, thrushes, finches and blackbirds also visit.

Welcoming wine On arriving at Ohariu Lodge you'll find a bottle of quality New Zealand wine along with fresh fruit and delicious locally-made chocolates waiting for you.

Explore the lodge and the grounds. There's a petanque (boules) set for use on the lawn, and a small telescope for viewing the spectacular southern hemisphere sky on those crystal clear nights.

The large deck which faces the main lawn includes outdoor furniture.

The lodge is approximately 132 square metres and the sun deck about 39 square metres. The cosy lounge area has modern furniture and a woodburner (logburner) fire.

There's also a 3-change CD stereo, television, DVD player, and a selection of books and magazines for those lazy days when you want to do nothing more than kick back and relax.

An antique writing desk is in the lounge, for when you want to write those postcards telling the folks back home what a wonderful place Wellington is!

Table for fourThe dining area is just off the lounge, with a table seating four.

All crockery and cutlery is included; all you have to bring is whatever food and drink you'll need for your stay.

Fully-equipped kitchenThe kitchen is fully-equipped with electric stove, microwave and refrigerator, and all the usual utensils you'd expect to find. There's storage for your wine, and a large pantry for your food.

On those sunny summer days when you can't face cooking in the kitchen, help yourself to the barbecue out on the deck. The table on the deck is large enough for dining, and is conveniently located just outside the kitchen.

For supplies, the suburb of Johnsonville has three supermarkets to choose from, one of which is open round the clock.

Master bedroom The master bedroom - 15 square metres - comprises a queen-size bed, with wardrobe, bedside tables, long mirror and extra drawers.

The second bedroom of 12 square metres has two single beds and accompanying bedside tables and mirror. The two beds can be zipped together to make a double bed if required.

Luxurious velour robes are available for your use during your stay.

Spacious bathroomThe large modern bathroom comprises a shower, WC and vanity, heated towel rails, and includes a washing machine should you need it during your stay.

Water for the lodge is pure clean rainwater, collected from the rooftops on the property and stored in water tanks. No chlorine, no fluoride or any other additives. (The only thing we ask is that you conserve water where possible, particularly during the dry summer months!)

Quality toiletries are complimentary.

The bathroom also affords easy access to the spa pool deck.

Spa daytimeThe spa pool, enclosed on three sides but open to the lawn and trees (floodlit at night), is the perfect private place to relax and unwind after a hectic day's sightseeing.

Because the nearest shopping is five kilometres (three miles) away - a pleasant rural drive nonetheless - we also keep on hand a limited range of groceries, pre-packaged meals, beers, wine and non-alcoholic drinks in case you're just too relaxed to want to go into Johnsonville!

The streamPlease note that due to the open stream that burbles through the property, Ohariu Lodge is not suitable for small childen (sorry!).

Although the stream is usually gentle (pictured), the water level can rise after heavy rains, and as there is no fencing along the stream, the health and safety of our guests is always our priority.

The lodge itself is also a non-smoking zone, although you are welcome to smoke outside on the deck, the lawn, or elsewhere on the property.
